5G stands for fifth generation. 5G is the latest and most transformative network technology since the introduction of wireless services. Here's everything you need to know about 5G.
What is 5G+?
5G+ (or 3500 MHz spectrum) is the latest network technology that'll improve the existing Rogers 5G network. It'll help deliver a better combination of speed, capacity and coverage. We anticipate it to offer up to 50% more network capacity. Think of it as more lanes on a highway to be able to handle more traffic.
- Think: At crowded concerts or sports games, these network improvements will reduce congestion so you can stay connected at blazing fast speeds among large crowds.
- Think: You can download an HD movie in as little as 1 minute.
What’s the 5G standalone network?
The 5G standalone network has its own network. It doesn’t rely on existing or LTE network. This service will help bring advanced wireless capabilities including ultra-low latency data transmission, network slicing and mobile edge computing. Learn more about our 5G Standalone device certification.
What’s the Rogers 5G and 5G+ network coverage?
We rolled out Canada’s first 5G network in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal in 2020. Today, we provide 5G service in over 2,000 communities and we’re continuing to expand across Canada!
We’ve started to roll out 5G+ network access to urban areas of select Canadian cities. We’ll be continually expanding access over the next few years. Check our current coverage map.
How can I access the 5G and 5G+ networks?
If you are in a 5G or 5G+ coverage area with a Rogers 5G mobile plan, compatible device and SIM card, your phone will automatically connect to the network.
Will I be able to access 5G networks outside Canada?
5G access abroad depends on the country you’re in. If the country you’re in doesn’t offer 5G coverage, you’ll have access to the fastest speeds available.
We offer 5G roaming in the US on select devices, and are working on rolling out access across additional international destinations. Your device will always select the fastest network supported based on your device and local carrier.
Even if your phone doesn’t support 5G roaming, you can still use Roam Like HomeTM with your 5G phone in over 185 international destinations. Learn more about Roam Like Home.
My phone and plan are 5G ready. Why am I still unable to access the 5G network?
A lot of reasons could explain why you might not be able to connect to the 5G network. We can help you troubleshoot the issue.
- The 3G high-speed network (HSPA+) or 4G LTE network’s signal may be stronger in your current location.
- You must be in a 5G or 5G+ coverage area. Check our current coverage map.
- The Rogers 5G network isn't available in Extended Coverage areas or outside Canada.
We take our responsibility for keeping customer data and information private and secure very seriously. We work with government and industry partners to help make sure our networks are safe and secure.
Since 1985, we've partnered with Ericsson and invested billions in our wireless networks to deliver a faster, more reliable experience than ever before. Additionally, the devices we sell meet all Government of Canada standards and are certified for use in Canada.
Are there health concerns associated with the Rogers 5G network?
The health and safety of all Canadians is of utmost importance to us. We work closely with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada to make sure every product and service we offer Canadians meets rigorous safety standards.
All of our products and services meet Safety Code 6: Health Canada's Radiofrequency Exposure Guidelines.
