Protecting your personal information online

It’s important to protect your personal information (this can include your name, birthdate, address etc.). To help you protect your data, check out these tips:

Safeguard your accounts

  • Passwords: Set strong and unique pa$5w0rds for each account. Use passphrases to increase security.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Enable two-factor authentication whenever possible. Using MFA requires you to enter your username & password and a second form of validation, such as a verification code.

Control what you share

  • Privacy settings: Maintain your mystery online. Social media platforms tend to update their privacy settings; check them regularly to ensure you control what's shared publicly.

Safe browsing

  • Think before you click: Avoid clicking on any spam or pop-ups in your emails, apps or websites. Go directly to the source by opening a new window and searching for the official website.
  • Public WiFi: Be smart while using public WiFi – it can be a cozy place for cyber criminals to snoop around. Avoid accessing sensitive information such as banking or online shopping.

Good habits to have

  • Passcodes: Lock down your devices. Your smartphones, tablets and laptops are a direct line of access to your emails, online shopping and bank accounts. Protect them with a passcode or pattern and always lock your devices whenever unattended.
  • Regular clean up: Routinely clear your web browser cache and cookies to remove session ID and credentials that may be stored locally.
