How to use WiFi-based motion sensing in the Rogers Xfinity app

Your WiFi gateway and other devices on your WiFi network can be used to detect movement in your home. This setting is off by default, but you can activate it in the Rogers Xfinity app.

Once activated, you can adjust when you want to be notified of motion detection. You’ll be able to review activity history for the past 7 days.

WiFi-based motion sensing is available to customers with Rogers Xfinity Internet and an Rogers Xfinity Gateway Gen 3 who aren't using Rogers Xfinity WiFi Boost Pods. WiFi Motion isn’t a home security service and isn’t professionally monitored.

What is WiFi Motion?

WiFi Motion uses your existing WiFi-connected devices and gateway to detect movement within your home. When movement disrupts the wireless signal between your gateway and another device, it registers as motion.

You can choose which devices on your network will detect motion. A device is a good option for WiFi-based motion sensing if it:

  • Stays in one place,
  • Is always on (though some devices may not sense motion reliably in sleep mode),
  • Has a strong WiFi signal, and
  • Isn’t connected to a WiFi extender or pod.

Think about the path from the device to your gateway—this is the area where it'll sense motion. Devices that are directly above or below your gateway on a different floor won’t offer a useful sensing area.

How to activate WiFi-based motion sensing

Follow these steps to turn on WiFi Motion or follow the step-by-step interactive guide Activating WiFi-based motion sensing.

  1. From the Rogers Xfinity app main screen, select Home
  2. Select Check out WiFi Motion, then Get Started
  3. Select the WiFi motion sensing checkbox, then Continue
  4. Select Use recommended devices
  5. Select Done

Changing your motion sensitivity

In your WiFi Motion settings, you can select the motion sensitivity level that best fits your home. If you have shared walls with neighbours, having your WiFi Motion devices next to these shared walls may cause extra notifications.

  • High sensitivity will detect smaller movements like the wave of a hand.
  • Medium sensitivity will detect bigger movements like a person walking around.
  • Low sensitivity may be a good fit if higher sensitivities are causing unwanted notifications.

How to change your motion sensitivity:

  1. On the Home tab, select the WiFi Motion status.
  2. Select the settings gear icon
  3. Select Motion sensitivity and choose High, Medium or Low.

Excluding your pets from WiFi Motion notifications and history

With “High motion sensitivity” turned on, you can adjust your settings to exclude pets smaller than 40lbs from your motion events and notifications. Larger pets will likely still register as motion.

Placing your WiFi Motion devices at least 4 feet off the floor may also help prevent pet motion from being detected.

How to exclude pet motion:

  1. On the Home tab, select the WiFi Motion status.
  2. Select the settings gear icon.
  3. Select Pet sensitivity and toggle on Exclude small pets.
