How to use Audio Description on Rogers Xfinity TV

Also known as described video, the Audio Description feature offers audio-narrated descriptions of key visual elements like facial expressions, costumes, on-screen text and scenery changes that a visually impaired viewer would otherwise miss. Learn how to enable audio description on Rogers Xfinity TV or Rogers TV using the remote control or the Accessibility Settings Menu from the on-screen guide. 

Follow these steps to turn Audio Description on or offon Rogers Xfinity TV.

Using a voice command

  1. Press and hold the Mic button on your Rogers Xfinity Voice Remote.
    • If you have the XR11 Rogers Xfinity Voice Remote, the OK button is a slightly indented rectangle.
    • If you have the XR15 Rogers Xfinity Voice Remote, the OK button is a prominent round button isolated from the other keys, directly below the arrow buttons.
  2. Use a voice command like "Turn on Audio Description."
  3. Release the Mic button.
  4. To turn it off, simply press the Mic button and say, “Turn off Audio Description.”

Using a Rogers Xfinity Voice Remote

  1. Press the B button on your Rogers Xfinity Voice Remote to open the Accessibility menu.
  2. Highlight Audio Description and press the OK button to toggle the feature on or off.

Using the progress bar

You can enable audio description using the remote control to bring up the Progress bar.  

  1. While watching full-screen video, press the down arrow on your remote. The progress bar will pop up on the lower portion of the screen. 

  1. Press the left or right arrow keys to highlight the Audio Description on/off option on the screen (the Audio Description logo). 

  1. Press OK to turn Audio Description on or off

Using the Accessibility Settings menu

You can also enable audio description from the Accessibility Settings menu. 

  1. Press the Rogers button on the remote control from any screen to bring up the Rogers Xfinity TV main menu. 

  1. Use the Rogers button or the up/down arrow buttons to navigate to the Settings menu, represented by the gear icon on the right-hand side of the menu. Press the OK button in the centre of the arrow keys to enter the menu.  

  1. Once in the Settings menu, use the arrow buttons to navigate to Accessibility Settings. Press OK. 

  1. From Accessibility Settings, use the arrow buttons to navigate to Audio Description. Press OK to toggle Audio Description on or off. 

  1. You can now press Exit to return to viewing your program. If the program has an Audio Description track, you'll now hear Audio Description. 

  1. To turn off Audio Description, simply repeat these steps from the Accessibility Settings menu. 

As you browse the guide on your TV, the information for each program will note whether Audio Description is available, shown by the video. 

If enabled, voice guidance will announce the availability of Audio Description as you explore the program's information in the Guide. 

Note: You won’t hear Audio Description when a commercial is being broadcast. You also may not hear Audio Description during scenes primarily featuring dialogue, since there may not be much on-screen action to describe.

Enabling Audio Description with Rogers TV

You can also enable Audio Description on Roger TV’s digital cable box by pressing the “D” button on your Rogers remote.   

When descriptive video services is enabled, you will hear a voice-over on supported programming which describes the visual elements occurring on-screen and a narration of the events.

Audio Description sign

Programs available with the Audio Description option will appear with aD))sign or icon for quick and easy identification. There are two methods for checking if the D))sign is being displayed. 

From the Guide: 
Select Info and view the right column of the screen to determine if the D))sign is displayed. 
From On-Demand: 
Select Watch options or a specific show to determine if the D))sign is displayed. 

Note: In the Watch options, not all programs will display theD))sign. Press the down arrow on your Rogers Xfinity TV remote to find the program option with the D))sign.

Descriptive/Audio video exceptions

When audio description is enabled, you'll hear a voice-over on programming that describes the visual elements occurring on-screen and a narration of the events. However,  there are a few limitations to audio description: 

  • Some channels (specifically WWE Network) may default to a Spanish voice-over when audio description is enabled. 

  • Some channels don't have an audio descriptive stream. These channels may appear as having no audio at all.
